Lisa
Zahiya is an innovative, award-winning performer, in-demand instructor,
studio owner and sought after childrens dance teacher. Working in
the genres of bellydance, Indian dance (Bollywood & Bhangra) and
hip-hop dance, Lisa travels nationally and internationally teaching
and performing.
Based
in the creative center of Asheville, NC, Lisa has created a unique
souful fusion of bellydance and hip hop that she playfully has deemed
"belly-funk." In 2008, her strong powerful style earned
her the title "2008 Tribal Fusion Bellydancer of the Universe"
and she went on to win the Alternative Category at the Wiggles of
the West bellydance competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Lisa
is a alumni of the University of Maryland Dance Team and has a background
in musicial theatre, jazz and hip hop. After graduating college, she
discovered Middle Eastern dance and immediately fell in love with
its history, culture and beauty. Lisa studied with Master Teachers
in the Baltimore/Washington area including Artemis Mourat, Laurel
Victoria Gray and second-generation bellydancer Piper Reid Hunt. She
is certified in the Piper Method of American Bellydance and has completed
two professionals' intensives with the phenomenal Aziza.
Lisa
is also known for her work with children, women healing from eating
disorders and dance as a healing art. Lisa is a resident artist with
The LEAF Festival. She has taught Middle Eastern Dance and Bhangra
at several local high schools, the University of North Carolina, Asheville
and as a teacher for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
